sorry for this off topic post, but something just struck me, and i have to get it verified:

is the name matt more common in the pacific north west? it seems like every 20 or 30 something from oregon, washington and bc share this fantastic name. anybody feels the same? for some reason, i get a feeling it's pretty common in new england as well. maybe it's a mountain or forest thing? ;-)

"Matt" for you is short for 'Mattias'. However, here in America, "Matt" is generally short for 'Matthew', which many of our Bible carrying forefathers thought was a name that represented spiritual forethought and wisdom. At least that is the way it was explained to me by a bible scholar years ago when the subject of taking names from the Bible came up. As such, it is one of the most common names in America, particulary in areas that were originally settled by religious groups.

PS: Did you get my email about compression settings for internet movies? I'm still baffled.

that's what i thought. mattias and matthew is actually the same name basically, originating from the hebrew name matteus, which means "gift from god." when i lived in the states, lots of people who knew me as matt actually called me matthew when they wanted to act serious, crazy or just familiar. ;-)

so, were there an unusual amount of christian settlers in the north west or not?

Strangely enough, I have a brother, Matt, who moved up to Portland a few years ago...I'm not sure if it had anything to do with any Christ-like tendencies, however...

Well, I don't know how common it is.
I run into someone else named Matt every 9-12 months, so it's certainly not like Steve, Mike, David, Mark, etc.
As for why my parents named me Matt, it was as trick my Mom played on my Dad (not for laughs), and I'm thankful of it.
    My parents liked unusual names.
My brothers are named Zane, Kipp and Ross, and my sisters are Mickie and Frances.
So when I was born, my dad was set on naming me Chester, which my mom did no like at all!
So when the nurse asked my Mom what my name was, she thought quickly, and blurted out Matthew.
    At least it's not Chester!
    Thank you Mom!!!!
